Painted wolves: my favourite animal

When I’m asked to choose my favourite animal it is hard to choose. I look close to home and am tempted to pick the wonderful lemur, the dazzling flamingo or the majestic giant tortoise. But whenever I am fortunate enough to go on safari at Ulusaba in South Africa, I know my answer: the painted wolf.

Image from Nicholas Dyer

We got the chance to see them up close at Virgin Limited Edition’s Ulusaba recently and they were absolutely spectacular. Seeing them hunting is an awesome experience. Unlike most animals, they work as a family, hunting as a team and looking after their young and wounded in an organised, effective way.

Creating a blueprint for the electric grid of the future

During last year’s hurricane season, Rocky Mountain Institute’s (RMI’s) Islands Energy Programme issued a call to action – focusing on rebuilding a resilient and renewable future for Caribbean islands. Instead of investing capital into reconstructing the existing electricity grid (based on old technology), RMI worked with island governments and utilities to leapfrog ahead with energy systems that will make the Caribbean region far less vulnerable to future storms – creating a blueprint for the electric grid of the future. Their programme focuses on three key pillars – energy and resilience planning, project development and implementation support, and capacity building.

Energy and resilience planning RMI has supported five island nations seeking to transition away from imported diesel-fueled electricity, to clean energy with national energy transition strategies and integrated resource plans. These action plans have helped address barriers preventing the energy transition and have unlocked dozens…

Reopening Necker Island

Image from Virgin Limited Edition

Welcome back! It’s been an incredible journey since Hurricane Irma last year to restore Necker Island and reopen our home to guests.

Image from Virgin Limited Edition

There is still a long way to go for the whole of the British Virgin Islands to recover from the hurricane, and we are working hard with Unite BVI and the entire BVI community to support all manner of projects and initiatives. Head over to Unite BVI to see the latest.

Image from Virgin Limited Edition

The whole team have done an incredible job, and that goes for the Necker Island teeam too. When I think back to the desolation after the hurricane, it is astonishing to think this is the same island. One of our…

Protecting the Antarctic for penguins, peace and the planet

Earlier this month, the Paris Peace Forum brought people together from around the world in support of collective, global action. Over three days, states, international organisations, local governments, NGOs and foundations, companies, experts, journalists, trade unions, religious groups and citizens focused on the solutions needed to deliver a safer, more peaceful and healthy planet for all of us.

Image from Getty Images

120 projects from around the world selected from 850 applications, were presented in five “villages”: peace and security, environment, development, new technologies and inclusive economy. Our team from Ocean Unite was there to talk about their Antarctica2020 initiative, a project focused on securing the strong protection of at least seven million square kilometres of the Southern Ocean by 2020 (the 200th anniversary of its discovery). What, you may be thinking, does protecting penguins have to do with securing global peace and security?…

Serving up the Necker Cup 2018

“When I was 40, my doctor advised me that a man in his Forties shouldn’t play tennis. I heeded his advice carefully and could hardly wait until I reached 50 to start again.” So said the Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. Well, I played through my Fifties and am picking up a racquet even more regularly in my Sixties. Good luck to any doctor who can stop me playing in my Seventies!

Image from the Necker Cup

I’ll soon be stepping out onto the courts for the annual Manuka Doctor Necker Cup presented by Metal, our pro-am tournament that pairs keen amateurs like yours truly with tennis greats past and present. In previous years we’ve been honoured to welcome the likes of Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova, Novak Djokovic, Justine Henin and Grigor Dimitrov to the tournament. This year we’re thrilled to have players…

Cosmic Girl takes to the skies with a rocket under its wing

If our 747 could talk, it would probably say “What on Earth is that hanging from my wing?” Delighted to share that Virgin Orbit’s Cosmic Girl has completed a successful test flight with a rocket tucked under its wing for the first time.

Image from Virgin Orbit

The captive carry test flight saw the specially modified 747-400 carrying a 70-foot-long rocket under its wing in the skies over Southern California. It marks the first time a 747 has carried a rocket, let alone a space rocket, in its 70 year history and is a big step forward for the company as we look forward to reaching orbit in early 2019.

Editor’s letter: June Sarpong on creating agents of change at work

The return of our Breaking Barriers Spotlight series sees June Sarpong take up the reins as Guest Editor. Here the Diversify author explains the role we all have to play in making our workplaces more diverse and representative. The United Kingdom is by definition a mixture of nations, cultures and peoples, diversity is what we do – it’s on the tin and in our DNA! Our desire to access the people, goods and services we need regardless of natural or manmade boundaries has led us to become a global trading nation with a society that has attracted individuals from all over the world, thus creating the multicultural melting pot we pride ourselves on. However, the inclusivity that is needed to make diverse societies function effectively is not always evident either by statistic or if we are honest in our daily experience. For example, research from Inclusive Employers unearthed the fact that 25 per…

My close shaves

Saying yes has got me into a lot of trouble over the years. I find it hard to turn down a new adventure or experience and love giving everything a go. In Finding My Virginity, I revealed my 75 close shaves – though I had to update the paperback to 76 after Hurricane Irma hit the BVI and I had a near miss with a bathtub flying through the air and landing where I had earlier been sat.

Image from Virgin.com

It was great fun to sit down with LADBible recently and talk them through some of the very close calls that stand out to me. The challenge I was most scared of was when we were crossing the Pacific in a hot air balloon. We lost half our fuel when full tanks dropped as we jettisoned empty fuel. We thought we would run…

From hurricanes to satellites

Last year, hurricanes absolutely devastated much of the Caribbean, including our home in the British Virgin Islands. Buildings were destroyed, entire cities leveled, and millions of people lost power and telecommunication. Lacking connection to the world, the prospect of recovery seemed bleak. Among those most crucial to the relief effort were the women and men of the United States Air Force’s Air Mobility command. Deploying within hours of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, they transported aid workers, refugees, and nearly five million pounds of critical relief supplies to people and nations in desperate need.

So, I was honoured when General Maryanne Miller, the newly appointed 4-star general who runs the Air Mobility Command, invited me to join her on stage as a surprise guest at a conference for and about the men and women under her command. General Miller wanted…

From Bali to the bottom of the Blue Hole in Belize

Ocean aficionados and governments from all over the world have gathered in Bali for the start of the 5th Our Ocean conference. It’s called ‘Our Ocean, Our Legacy’ to remind us all of the critically important need for all of us to act to regenerate ocean life and build its resilience to change. This annual gathering was started by my friend Secretary John Kerry, and has already generated commitments to ocean health totaling around USD 18 billion with pledges to protect 12.4 million square kilometers in marine protected areas. Here’s wishing the Indonesian government great success as they take the helm this week and steer us towards innovative solutions for tackling today’s most pressing ocean challenges like climate change, overfishing and marine plastic debris. While I have looked up to the stars my whole life dreaming of exploring space, I have also always wanted to learn more about the largely unexplored space all…

Virgin Orbit’s LauncherOne meets Cosmic Girl 747

LauncherOne? Meet Cosmic Girl. The brilliant Virgin Orbit team have integrated our LauncherOne rocket with Cosmic Girl, our modified 747, for the very first time. These photos show the size of the rocket we attached to our 747. It will carry LauncherOne to more than 30,000 feet before the rocket engages its thrusters and flies into orbit early next year – travelling at 17,500mph, dropping off satellites and connecting the world.

Being human

Was delighted to join a fascinating group of business leaders, HR professionals, academics and experts to discuss the future of work, as part of the 100% Human at Work Working Group in Sydney. Virgin CEO Josh Bayliss and I were fortunate enough to drop in for part of the session and discuss our vision for more human, more effective businesses. We heard from Theresa, who spoke no English when she arrived in Australia after five years in a refugee camp. Remarkably, she qualified as a lawyer and eventually joined us at Virgin in the UK. She was worried her English wasn’t good enough and her reports would get rejected, but her team supported her development and she grew into a wonderful member of the team. Now she is back in Australia, running her own business – and her former manager is the godmother to her child.

Joining the Hollywood Walk of Fame and launching Virgin Fest

It is truly an honour to receive a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and it was so wonderful to accept the award on behalf of all the Virgin family. It was also particularly special to have my wife Joan by my side. Thank you very much to Leron Gubler and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for the award, the Virgin Atlantic cabin crew for joining us, and big thanks to Lance Bass and Ben Harper for sharing their kind words about our Virgin adventures, from releasing records to launching Megastores.

The value of dyslexic thinking

Fascinated to read a report which says the skills dyslexic people have such as problem solving and storytelling could help companies meet the challenges of business in the future. Made by Dyslexia have teamed up with Ernst & Young to assess the value of dyslexia – and the results are really interesting.

Image from Made By Dyslexia

The report delves into how the world of work is changing fast and how a revolution in skills is needed. Huge advances in technology will continue to challenge and change how we work and automation is creating new roles whilst displacing others, leading to a change in demand for workplace skills. More than one in 10 people are thought to have dyslexia, according to the report, and the potential impact dyslexics could have on the future of work is huge. It says how dyslexic people hold a unique set…

Virgin Trains launches prison employability training programme

Virgin Trains has launched the first in-prison employability training programme aimed at building the skills prisoners will need to make them job-ready on the day of release. The three-week employment and business course has been piloted at HMP Styal, a women’s prison near Manchester. Run in partnership with prison education and training provider Novus, the course will utilise Virgin Trains’ experience in delivering excellent customer experience as well as working with people with convictions. It comes two years after the rail operator made in-prison recruitment fairs a part of its regular recruitment process and removed the criminal record declaration box from its application forms. The pilot is believed to be the only privately-run training course which focuses on ‘soft skills’ such as building confidence, time-keeping and managing workplace relationships, which are highly valued by employers. It also complements the skills training programmes developed in prisons by other employers such as Timpson and Halfords.

Today (October 10th) is World Mental Health Day and on Virgin.com we’re be marking it with a panel discussion on how to embrace self-care in the workplace and support your co-workers livestreamed on our Facebook page and right here from 4.45pm (BST). One in four people in the UK suffer from mental ill-health each year, and 38 per cent of British people say that they are worried that revealing a mental health problem could jeopardise their career. According to the UK Centre for Mental Health, mental health issues cost businesses £35 million a year but with adoption of some simple workplace initiatives, 30 per cent of those costs could be offset.
