Get up and dance

People love to ask what makes the Virgin brand different from other brands – it’s all about the people who work for us and their attitude towards having fun.

A post shared by Richard Branson (@richardbranson) on Aug 3, 2018 at 1:37am PDT

There’s nothing that breaks the ice more at a function than blasting some great music and getting everyone up on the table for a bit of dancing. Zorba the Greek music always gets a dinner party going and is great to table dance to.

I was in Fincantieri’s shipyard in Italy recently celebrating the name reveal of Virgin Voyages new ship (we called her the Scarlet Lady, in case you were wondering). Shipyard’s aren’t typically the best place for celebrations and parties but our team had transformed the area (usually used…

Why I love crowdfunding

Now is the best time there has ever been to be an entrepreneur starting or growing a business. In 2015 I wrote that crowdfunding will change the world, but the speed of its impact has surpassed even my expectations.

In the UK the biggest crowdfunding platform, CrowdCube, has raised more than £390m in equity investment to help businesses scale. £130m of that was in 2017 alone. On a more global scale, rewards based crowdfunding platform Indiegogo (which we are proud investors in) is close to having generated an incredible $1.5bn for businesses and projects. That’s quite a crowd!

Image from Virgin StartUp

It’s incredible how this new format of fundraising has helped so many businesses find the cash and support they need. Many of these entrepreneurs would have ended up trying…

Creative matters for Student Magazine

I recently got chance to see all of the editions of Student Magazine together. It had been a long time since I’d seen the original versions and was great to get the distinctive feel of holding them in my hands.

Image from Virgin.com

Student gave young people a voice and challenged perceptions of youth culture, covering everything from pop culture and music to the Vietnam and Biafra wars. While looking through the magazines, I read my original editorial from the first issue. I think it set our stall out pretty well. One part of it highlighted one of the aims of the magazine – to reframe the way young people were seen.

VSS Unity goes into the Mesosphere at twice the speed of sound

So excited to see our beautiful spaceship VSS Unity back in the air at  Mach 2.47 (almost two and a half times the speed of  sound) as she successfully completed her third rocket powered, supersonic test flight in less than four months.

A post shared by Richard Branson (@richardbranson) on Jul 27, 2018 at 1:39am PDT

Behind every test flight lies meticulous preparation and analysis on the ground. I couldn’t be prouder of the teams at Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company, whose hard work and dedication makes every step closer to space possible.

Image from Virgin Galactic

After a clean release from carrier aircraft VMS Eve, pilots Dave Mackay and Mike “Sooch” Masucci lit the spaceship’s rocket motor, before pulling up into a near vertical climb and powering towards the black sky at Mach 2.47. The…

Second chances are good for us all

It was great to meet Chris, a 29-year old Virgin Trains employee, who is one of more than 30 ex-offenders who currently work for Virgin Trains after being identified through its ex-offender recruitment programme.

He is living proof of how someone can turn their lives around and fulfil their potential. As an entrepreneur and employer who needs to attract people with talent and enthusiasm, looking beyond criminal records and seeing people’s potential has always made good business sense to me. Who have you given a second chance?

The man who made Virgin’s murals

I was was with Holly and Sam on a bicycle ride in Oxford recently, in training for the Virgin Strive Challenge. We were passing The Manor, Virgin Records world-first country recording studio and manor house where everyone from Mike Oldfield to The Rolling Stones made music. So we went up to the front gate and rang the bell, on the off chance they would let us in.

Image from virgin.com

I hadn’t been there for many years, and the grandchildren had come along, so we wanted to show them around. Somebody answered the doorbell and asked who it was. “It’s Richard Branson,” I said. “I used to live here; I was wondering if we could come in and take a walk around the garden?”

Walk Together for a freer, fairer world

Every year, for ten wonderful years, I would receive the enormous honour of a call from Nelson Mandela on my birthday. That this legendary leader made the time to send me his regards was incredible enough. That he found the time on his own birthday was amazing. It was just one small way Madiba showed his warmth and his humanity.

On his 100th birthday, yesterday, The Elders were joined by thousands of people on an unforgettable walk to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy. The symbolic walk to Constitution Hill marked a year of the #WalkTogether campaign, which celebrates the courageous leadership of 100 grassroots Sparks of Hope. These organisations from around the world are continuing Mandela’s long walk to freedom through their work and the values of compassion, empathy and solidarity.

Revolution, HEAT and racing Sam at Virgin Active South Africa

There comes a time in every parent’s life when they have to accept that their child is finally faster than them. Well, that time hasn’t quite come for me quite yet…

A post shared by Richard Branson (@richardbranson) on Jul 16, 2018 at 8:23am PDT

I’m delighted to be in Johannesburg with my son Sam, wife Joan and lots of the Virgin family. We got chance to visit Virgin Active South Africa’s Rosebank health club today, and I challenged Sam to a race on the innovative outdoor sprint track. Hey, what do you mean I cut him up?!

Third for Bird and DS Virgin Racing in New York

DS Virgin Racing capped off their best ever season in New York this weekend, securing third place in both the teams’ and drivers’ championships. Sam Bird picked up points finishes in both races at the double header weekend but was just one point behind rival Lucas di Grassi to miss out on the championship runners-up spot. Saturday’s race saw Bird cross the line in ninth, holding on to second place in the standings before the season finale on Sunday. It was a tough race, with temperatures rising as high as 45 degrees on the track.

Bird’s teammate Alex Lynn saw an unfortunate ending to his race on Saturday, hitting the barrier in the closing stages and having to retire early. Sunday was a new day though and following wet conditions in the morning sessions Bird lined up on the grid in P8. At…

Losing my tie at Wimbledon

Many of you will know how much I dislike ties. So much, in fact, that I often have a pair of scissors handy to cut ties off unsuspecting wearers. But there’s one exception for me: Wimbledon’s Royal Box.

Image from Greg Rose

It’s a rule at what otherwise is the most wonderful of events. This week I was fortunate enough to visit my daughter Holly in London and attend Wimbledon. We had a glorious father-daughter day out, and got to see the brilliant Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori, Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro in action.

Image from Greg Rose

The standard of tennis was breathtaking, with unbelievable power, precision and finesse on display. They’re all great players, but Novak and Rafa are Necker Cup veterans who we’ve come to know and love, so I was…

Getting feedback on giving feedback

Feedback is one of the most important tools we all have to improve ourselves. Learning how your performance has impacted upon others can be crucial in deciding how to adapt what you do, how you do it, and why.

Image from Virgin Pulse

I’m often asked to give advice to people on how to start businesses and grow companies. But for our Virgin teams, I regularly give lots of feedback too. I’m a strong believer in praising more than discouraging, but I always give very honest feedback as it’s the best way to help people to improve.

Image ©Chris Rank/ Rank Studios

I also give lots of tips to our teams, and when I visited the Virgin Atlantic and Delta teams in Atlanta recently, I enjoyed a cuppa and a chat with many of them….

If you’re frustrated by something, is there a way to fix it?

Most of Virgin’s companies have been started out of a personal frustration and a desire to change the status quo to benefit consumers.

Image from Virgin.com

The next time you’re frustrated by something, try channelling that feeling into finding a solution. Make the change you want to see happen. What solutions have you found that benefit others?

What would you ask me?

Pre-order your copy of Finding My Virginity here It’s really important to value your customers feedback and as I learned from my dad, nobody every learned anything by listening to themselves speak.

In my new autobiography, Finding my Virginity, I write about how social media has changed the way companies interact with people and how I try and reply to as many people as possible. I asked people to put down the book and tweet me a question using #askrichard and said I’ll try to answer it. Since then, I’ve answered dozens and dozens of your questions.

Time flies when you’re having fun

Time flies when you’re having fun – so much has happened in the last 12 months that I had to update my autobiography Finding My Virginity.

A post shared by Richard Branson (@richardbranson) on Jul 2, 2018 at 1:44am PDT

The launch day is sneaking up ever closer – the updated paperback version is available to pre-order now and will be released this Thursday July 5th. It’s so exciting to see something you have written on the bookshelves and I can’t wait to hear what you think of the updated chapters. They contain details about the devastating hurricanes that destroyed our home and much of the Caribbean, our exciting new businesses, including Virgin Hyperloop, and of course getting very, very close to space with Virgin Galactic’s latest progress.

Becoming 100% Human

At Virgin we pride ourselves on trusting our people. Our people are our best asset and we have implemented world-class people policies to ensure they know how much we value them. But as a business there is always more to learn, more to try and more that can be done. No matter the size of your business, it is always worth asking the simple question: can your people be 100% themselves at work? You will never be a truly purposeful business if you are not INCLUSIVE. Yesterday, I spent a wonderful day exploring ‘inclusive initiatives’ from the teams at Virgin Media, Virgin Unite, the B Team, Unilever and EY, at a 100% Human at Work gathering. It was a fascinating learning experience.

Why you should try trying

I have been digging through Virgin’s archives while writing my new autobiography Finding My Virginity. I found lots of fun stories and photos from the history of Virgin. I came across this poster, which really stood out to me: “Who said ‘can’t’? Someone is always doing something someone else said was impossible. TRY TRYING.”

Image from Virgin.com

While I love focusing on the future, every now and then I love looking back over these things and reminiscing. Turns out the poster was right – I’ve tended to ignore those that tell me something is impossible. It’s great to look at this poster and remind myself of how far we’ve come and all we’ve achieved. Back in the days of Student Magazine and Virgin Records I could never have imagined that Virgin would expand into planes, trains, holidays, wine, gaming, experiences, hotels, cruises, space, hyperloop and…

Welcoming Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki to the Necker Cup

I like to play tennis…. well, that might be an understatement! I love the sport and once dreamed of playing at Wimbledon. Although my life took a different path, I do take my tennis quite seriously. When on Necker, I start most of my days picking up a racquet, playing twice a day in the morning and evening. It certainly helps me get focused for the day ahead, being present to the sound of the lemurs and the sight of flamingos flying overhead.

This November 24-29th, the 2018 Manuka Doctor Necker Cup & Necker Open presented by Metal will return to Necker Island. Make your move

Virgin only grew and developed because we took bold risks – from selling Virgin Records to starting Virgin Atlantic, from launching Virgin Blue to founding Virgin Galactic.

There is a big difference between a calculated risk and a foolish gamble. Business is like a giant game of chess: you have to make strategic moves, and learn quickly from your mistakes. What does risk taking mean to you?
