Serving up the Necker Cup 2018

Serving up the Necker Cup 2018

“When I was 40, my doctor advised me that a man in his Forties shouldn’t play tennis. I heeded his advice carefully and could hardly wait until I reached 50 to start again.” So said the Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. Well, I played through my Fifties and am picking up a racquet even more regularly in my Sixties. Good luck to any doctor who can stop me playing in my Seventies!

I’ll soon be stepping out onto the courts for the annual Manuka Doctor Necker Cup presented by Metal, our pro-am tournament that pairs keen amateurs like yours truly with tennis greats past and present.

In previous years we’ve been honoured to welcome the likes of Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova, Novak Djokovic, Justine Henin and Grigor Dimitrov to the tournament. This year we’re thrilled to have players including the great Serena Williams, Pat Cash, Caroline Wozniacki, Tommy Haas, Eugenie Bouchard and Mike Bryan with us.

I’m yet to get my hands on the winning trophy, have made the final a few times and am eager to go one better this year. I’ve been keeping in decent shape since the gruelling Virgin Strive Challenge, keeping my Virgin Active sessions in my diary and putting in the hours on the tennis court.

It’s not all about the tennis – the Necker Open golf tournament and its infamous hole-in-one challenge is always a highlight, while Kenny Chesney will be performing and we will be raising funds for the National Tennis Foundation and Virgin Unite. Through previous Necker Cups, Legends Camps, live and online auctions we have raised more than $4 million for good causes and look forward to adding to the total this year.

We’re also looking forward to welcoming more guests to Necker, having reopened the island recently. I’ll be sure to share plenty of photos of the action – hopefully including yours truly with a trophy in hand!
