What We’ve Been Told About Passion is Bullshit

I have an unbelievable respect for talented artists. When I see life like portraits that an artist has drawn using only three different shades of colored pencils I often don’t believe that what I’m looking at isn’t a photo. Like the one above.
Or someone who paints landscapes of mountain ranges and rivers that look as real and as wild as if they were right in front of you. The fact that sculpters that can take a chisel and hammer and carve out of stone a full sized person completely fascinates me. I have such an appreciation for almost all types of art. I say almost, because there’s one type of art I just don’t get: abstract art. The painting Onement by Barnett Newman is…

How to Do What You Love – And Get Paid for It

For most people the concept of doing what you love and receiving money do not go hand in hand. At most we can do what we love in our spare time or as a hobby but being paid for what you enjoy doing is considered a utopian ideal.
In this day in age there are a variety of choices available out in the world, but we still function from the point of view of lack of choices and scarcity, especially when it comes to earning money. We are constantly bombarded with the idea that in order to be successful we have to work hard and make big sacrifices. The phrase “no pain, no gain” is something we have all heard time…

How to Stop Your Busyness with Mindfulness

You’re reading How to Stop Your Busyness with Mindfulness, originally posted on Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement. If you’re enjoying this, please visit our site for more inspirational articles.

Most of us live busy lives, probably too busy. We may be aware of how busy we are, and might not even like it, but unless we do something to stop the excessive amount of work we have, or activities we do, and not give ourselves enough idle time, we’re going to be stuck on the hamster wheel of busyness, and might not even know how to get off it.
Mindfulness, which is being in the present moment with total awareness, helps us be more conscious of how much we’re doing, and when we find ourselves over-extended, or stressed about how busy we are, we bring ourselves into the present moment with clarity, and decide that we need to stop, or make a change in our…

The Levels of Listening Help Us Connect

To support the goal of creating connections with others, I isolated one of the most critical elements of good communication: listening. Communication is simply one of the biggest factors in our relationships. It is a critical element in our work connections, how we see our boss or company leadership, and how we grow (or break) personal relationships. And one of the most critical skills needed is, in fact, not saying anything at all. Those who are introverts do not need to be told this, but perhaps it helps to hear a reminder that everyone has the permission to listen and be quiet.
There are several levels of listening that you may practice, some of which are not serving you. If you recognize that improving your communication…

It can be hard to save money right now – wage growth is slow, everyday expenses are greater than they used to be and for many people, saving up for a housing deposit is a distant pipe dream.
A lot of people think that saving money for the big purchases in life like a home or car means living like a hermit and never seeing your friends, but this is far from the truth.
You can still save money and be financially responsible and fun to be around – it’s all about finding the right balance.
Here are five ways you can do just that without being boring.
1. Conduct a financial health check

It seems that most of us are quite busy nowadays. There are so many things we want to accomplish, yet so little time. This is what makes it crucial for us to perfect our organizational skills, in order to maximize the time we have at our disposal. It can be quite disappointing to have a lot of things on your mind and, nevertheless, fail to accomplish them because of lack of productivity, motivation, perseverance, so on and so forth.
But if you took the time to think about it, you would realize that your mindset is what matters the most when it comes to productivity. However, how would you define a productive mindset? Or, better said, which are the fundamental elements of a productive mindset? We would…

CBD Oil — What are Potential Effects on the Brain?

You’re reading CBD Oil — What are Potential Effects on the Brain?, originally posted on Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement. If you’re enjoying this, please visit our site for more inspirational articles.

CBD (short for Cannabidiol) is a chemical compound that is found in marijuana and hemp. Among other things, CBD works as an antioxidant, pain reliever, mood balancer, and according to medical research, it also generates effects that set it apart as a fantastic herb for not only stimulating neurological function but also for eliminating free radicals and preventing cell deterioration.
Why are CBD and THC so different?

While the chemical makeup is similar, the molecular structures are different.
Also, CBD does not interact with the body the same way the other cannabinoids do (through CB1 and CB2 receptors).
Instead, a more complicated process occurs between cannabidiol and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that leads to physiological changes.

CBD is known to have significant neuroprotective effects that could…

Thing is, you can invest in all the courses, attend every seminar and read hundreds of books.
But knowledge without action is useless.
There’s a huge difference between intellectually knowing something and taking action on it so you discover the impact of that knowledge on an experiential level.
It’s like watching someone on a rollercoaster.
You’re not going to experience the thrill and intensity of all the twists and turns.

‘When starting from scratch to reinvent yourself choose a powerful and loving mindset.’
– Glenn Bott, Survivor, Speaker, Warrior
Imagine suddenly waking up with no idea of where you are or why you’re there? Everything looks strange. You have no recollection of anything prior to this moment. You somewhat remember “you”, but only from a deep feeling and familiarity. You can’t remember your name, or anything that happened before this moment.
I am very fortunate to fully recover from this normally devastating and rocky abyss known as a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). At first I was unable to explain my successful recovery. After years of continuous and incremental progress I now have at least part of the answer.
Recovering from a TBI is an interesting…

Unthreading Anxiety

I was born in the middle of a war zone. One of my earliest memories is of a bomb falling near our house on an otherwise quiet day. So wholly unexpected it freaked the hell out of me. And this is how my friendship with anxiety was born.
I went through life having a sensibly over-alert nervous system trying to keep me alive, even long after the war was over. In medical terms you might call this PTSD or generalized anxiety, I personally don’t identify with those concepts at all.
I don’t see my being or experience in the world as pathological or requiring medical intervention. This is true for me, but it may not be true for others. I’m not opposed to psychiatry or medical interventions. It has simply been…

Fifty years ago, most people were ignorant about healthy dietary choices. It was an impossible task, for the average Joe, to discern between proteins and fats, complex and simple carbohydrates. And we are always seeking out for what’s new and what’s next all the time.

How Recapping My Days Changed My Life

In 2015, I made a New Years resolution. At the start of each day, I would review what I had done the previous day and log it in a text file. This wouldn’t be literally everything (Otherwise it would get rather tedious); just things that were worth remembering or indicated some kind of action had been taken that would move me forward, no matter how small. If I made a new recipe, it would go in. If I saw a new movie, it would go in. Four years later, and I can safely say that this is one of the best decisions I have ever made. These are some of the ways recapping my days has changed my life.

Gives my life an arc

Here’s How To 10X Your Personal Growth

You’re reading Here’s How To 10X Your Personal Growth, originally posted on Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement. If you’re enjoying this, please visit our site for more inspirational articles.

There’s one problem when it comes to Personal Growth.
Most of us don’t even know the depth of our problems. 60–70% of the time I’m mistaken in doing so. It’s my father or my journal that uncovers the whole situation for me most of the times.
I never knew that I was so reactive.
I never knew that negative self-talk was a problem.
I never knew that I was playing blame-game with myself.
I never knew that I was lying to myself.
There’s a lot that I still don’t know. But I’m hopeful. I’ve come this far already, and there’s no way I’m turning back.
What’s Personal Growth? (sounds boring)
To the mind, it is just another term that it will get excited about for a few hours. After that, it’ll have or…

Here is how it went:

I moved to the U.S. as an international student from the Netherlands.
I got rejected by Fortune 500 companies because they didn’t want to take the risk.
They would have to sponsor my visa.
I had two Master’s Degrees, experience at global and local companies, worked with the United Nations, co-founded two companies, and had a LinkedIn network of 1,200+ connections.
All my education is in English and I have knowledge of 5 other languages.
I sacrificed everything for my education and career to be here. Family, friends, promotions and most of all,…

Have you heard a saying “creative mess”?
It’s what many people characterize artists by, as creative chaos is the lifestyle of any creator. There are even supporters of a so-called “the creative chaos theory”, who claim that a creative process is impossible without a little mess.
