How often have you carved out time to meditate, only to squander those twenty to thirty minutes obsessively thinking of what you need to accomplish, or drifting off to sleep from exhaustion only to emerge with your anxieties intact? I can certainly attest to having this type of meditative experience and I’m not the only one. My clients often express that meditation makes them more frustrated and sometimes even erroneously validates their sense of being a failure, simply because they cannot achieve stillness. It would seem that unless you grew up in a Buddhist monastery and learned to still your mind at age eight, meditation is likely more exasperating than refreshing for you.
The bottom line is that few of us are…

Thankfully, similar to physical conditions like joint pain or eczema, mental health problems can be treated and managed before they become increasingly debilitating over time.
That’s why it’s so important to develop strategies for improving your mental health on a daily basis. This goes double for those who are actively working through substance abuse recovery. In the same way, a bit of daily exercise makes a big difference in long-term physical health, utilizing mental health tools helps to…

Did you ever look at someone and think, “Wow, this person’s going to do great things someday.”
The person stood out amongst his or her peers. She got straight A’s on her report and was praised by all her teachers. He was charismatic and held major leaderships at school. The individual had the entire package.
Now fast forward to the present day. You haven’t seen or heard anything spectacular about the person. In fact, there’s just radio silence.
Maybe you know someone like this. Or, maybe you are that person.
I used to think that intelligence and a strong work ethic were the only necessary ingredients for success. But that’s not the case. While both are important, the two alone aren’t a guarantee for success. A number…

With a population of approximately twenty-five million that’s around five million people. Although there’s often a belief that the two conditions are the same there are distinct differences between them but exercise can be a remedy for both.
1. Sense of Purpose
Depression includes an inescapable feeling of despair and hopelessness. Sufferers perceive ordinary daily issues as insurmountable obstacles and have difficulty maintaining personal relationships leading to isolation and loneliness. A particularly stubborn string of habitual behaviors, or repetitive tendencies that lead to a certain amount of destructiveness in the host individuals.

CBD Oil — What are Potential Effects on the Brain?

You’re reading CBD Oil — What are Potential Effects on the Brain?, originally posted on Pick the Brain | Motivation and Self Improvement. If you’re enjoying this, please visit our site for more inspirational articles.

CBD (short for Cannabidiol) is a chemical compound that is found in marijuana and hemp. Among other things, CBD works as an antioxidant, pain reliever, mood balancer, and according to medical research, it also generates effects that set it apart as a fantastic herb for not only stimulating neurological function but also for eliminating free radicals and preventing cell deterioration.
Why are CBD and THC so different?

While the chemical makeup is similar, the molecular structures are different.
Also, CBD does not interact with the body the same way the other cannabinoids do (through CB1 and CB2 receptors).
Instead, a more complicated process occurs between cannabidiol and the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that leads to physiological changes.

CBD is known to have significant neuroprotective effects that could…

‘When starting from scratch to reinvent yourself choose a powerful and loving mindset.’
– Glenn Bott, Survivor, Speaker, Warrior
Imagine suddenly waking up with no idea of where you are or why you’re there? Everything looks strange. You have no recollection of anything prior to this moment. I am very fortunate to fully recover from this normally devastating and rocky abyss known as a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). At first I was unable to explain my successful recovery. After years of continuous and incremental progress I now have at least part of the answer.
Recovering from a TBI is an interesting…

Unthreading Anxiety

I was born in the middle of a war zone. One of my earliest memories is of a bomb falling near our house on an otherwise quiet day. So wholly unexpected it freaked the hell out of me. And this is how my friendship with anxiety was born.
I went through life having a sensibly over-alert nervous system trying to keep me alive, even long after the war was over. In medical terms you might call this PTSD or generalized anxiety, I personally don’t identify with those concepts at all.
I don’t see my being or experience in the world as pathological or requiring medical intervention. This is true for me, but it may not be true for others. I’m not opposed to psychiatry or medical interventions. It has simply been…

A good night’s sleep might seem like a luxury, but rest is a vital part of our overall health. Unfortunately, far too many Americans neglect their sleep needs.
In fact, about one-third of Americans struggle with sleep deprivation. That might not sound like a big deal, but a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that even one night of lost sleep increases the production of a protein in the brain called beta-amyloid, which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
While most people don’t connect a lack of sleep to such alarming consequences, everyone knows what it’s like to feel exhausted. Poor sleep habits create stress in our bodies and lead to fatigue, diminished concentration, slow reaction times, and increased irritability. Exhaustion also hurts the economy in…

As you walk down a store’s beauty aisle, it’s easy to choose the most popular brands and products that line the shelves. After all, they are on sale and the labels claim to be organic or all natural. Despite these perks, what consumers fail to realize is that these labels can deceive consumers into believing their items are safe and toxin-free.
The truth is the beauty market across the United States has lacked regulation compared to other areas around the world. While Europe has an official ban on well over 1,000 toxic ingredients, our nation has only banned 30 chemicals. This unsettling reality should be enough to inspire consumers to take a long hard look into the products they are applying to their hair, skin, and…
