5 Ways To Improve Your Sense of Self-Worth

5 Ways To Improve Your Sense of Self-Worth

It’s is a tough world we live in. Things happen, and we like to beat ourselves up over it. Through all of this, it can be difficult to maintain our sense of self-worth. We are human, after all, and with that comes a dangerous subjectivity in our self-perception.

When our sense of self-worth is low, we inherently limit our potential. How we view ourselves manifests in our outer world, and if we don’t believe we are worthy of success, we won’t achieve it.

Here are five quick tips to help you reaffirm your self-worth so that you can begin to live your most powerful life:

1. Realize Your Purpose or Potential

Worth says I have a purpose or the potential to bring value. If we buy something from the store and bring it home, we expect it to work. If it doesn’t, or it doesn’t work very well or in the way we need it to, we say it is worthless. But if we have a need and we can find and utilize something that fills that need, we might pay a significant amount for it. It has value to us.

Similarly, certain investments have a high worth because people believe that their appraisal may increase.  The investments have a potential to benefit their position.

Ultimately, our self-worth improves with how we think about our perceived value or usefulness.

Each and every one of us has tremendous worth because we all have a purpose! If your sense of self-worth is low, it is likely because you’ve never realized it or forgotten it. But it’s there. You were designed with a unique purpose and a unique contribution to offer the world. As you find it and live it out, the way you view yourself will skyrocket.

2. Be Genuine

Worth is often ascribed to things that are genuine.  People will pay more for a real Rolex versus an impostor. Nobody feels good about wearing a knock-off. It just makes you feel cheap.

We also will feel more valuable when we are authentic. When we are genuine, we and others can experience the real deal, not a counterfeit.  Being authentic recognizes my individuality, warts and all.  As such, it requires real honesty and humility.

But if we try to be someone we are not, we cheat ourselves and others. At some point, consciously or subconsciously, we realize our disingenuousness and begin to feel that loss of worth from being artificial. And this bites our self-worth in the butt.

Be yourself, and your sense of self-worth will improve. Everyone (even you) loves the genuine article.

3. Recognize Your Rarity

In the world of economics, worth adjusts to supply and demand.  Things become more valuable when fewer of them are available.

The particular model of car I have isn’t worth that much because there are a million of them.  But a 1957 Jaguar XKSS, one of the rarest cars in the world, even in moderately good shape will be worth 100 times more than my car.

Lots of one-of-a-kind things have high value.

But what’s even rarer than those things is you. There isn’t a single human alive that has your strengths, experiences, and purpose. No one can do what you are capable of in quite the manner you do it in. That makes you incredibly worthy.

4. Value Your God-Given Flaws

Stamps or coins with flaws are worth a lot, right? Accept your faults! Sometimes our limitations are there to make us more effective with a particular purpose.

Jon Morrow is the CEO of Smart Blogger, a wildly successful blog that teaches bloggers, ‘How to get more readers, become an authority in your niche, and get the attention you deserve’. Jon’s blog has over 100,000 subscribers and earns him over $100,000 per month.

What makes Jon so amazing is that he was diagnosed at a young age with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a condition that has left him entirely paralyzed. And yet, he has impacted an industry, become a millionaire, and traveled the world.

His success has undoubtedly come in part from the way he has inspired millions. When you watch Jon speak about his passion for helping others you get no sense at all that he is plagued with a low self-worth. What does come through is overwhelming gratitude and complete acceptance of who he is, despite a physical disability.

Find value in your flaws—they make you extremely valuable.

5. Acknowledge Your Artisanship

Handmade or custom-made products have a much higher worth than their mass-produced counterparts. People will pay far more for these types of products because the manufacturing methods and quality are so much higher. As custom products, they are also one-of-a-kind.

You are handcrafted by the greatest Artisan of the universe. You can take great comfort in knowing that. Take a moment and reflect on the craftsmanship of you—you are wonderfully made! No machine is more efficient and adaptive than you, and no computer can do what your mind can. You are truly amazing!

Begin to implement these five tips and you are sure to boost your sense of self-worth and find the success you deserve. If you needed to hear these words, someone else does too. Please comment and share to spread the love!

“Over the years, I’ve interviewed thousands of people…and I would say that the root of every dysfunction I’ve ever encountered, every problem, has been some sense of a lacking of self-value or of self-worth.” Oprah Winfrey
