Our Creamiest, Coziest Coffee Drinks to Shake Up Your Morning Cup

We’ve teamed up with Belle Coffee Creamer to give you a taste of how delicious real coffee creamer can be. Using real dairy and simple ingredients (read: no lactose, artificial hormones, or oil additives), Belle Coffee Creamer elevates the ordinary cup of coffee. Things are rarely black and white—except when it comes to coffee. In one corner you have black coffee drinkers, who somehow achieve caffeinated bliss with just water and beans. Their minimalist approach is enviable, but also unimaginable for coffee lovers who could not possibly live in a world without milk or cream to soften their daily cup (or two, or three) of joe. So, for those who like their coffee light (yes, please!), these creamy drinks are for you. To make them even richer, swirl in a real dairy creamer like Belle Vanilla or Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer in place of milk. Even if you prefer a more austere cup, these lattes,…

Our 17 Favorite Hot Drinks to Battle Cold Winter Nights

At the conclusion of a frosty commute, when my toes and fingers and ears are numb, I throw off my bulky jacket and immediately pop a large mug of water in the microwave (I’m too impatient to wait for a kettle to boil). I’m already halfway to my favorite way to warm up: a gigantic cup of fragrant, ruby rooibos. A warm drink (be it a cocktail or booze-free) first thaws my hands, but then builds a steady heat with each sip—sort of like a space heater for my insides. I’m partial to an aromatic mug of tea, but experiment with one of these 17 hot drinks to battle the cold. From Our Shop Elevated Craft Hybrid Cocktail Shaker $70–$75 More Colors

In hopes of reducing this risk, we spoke to the most opinionated coffee lovers of all—baristas—to identify the best gifts for all types of coffee lovers. Mugs & Cups

What It Takes to Become a Coffee ‘Sommelier’

It may be 4 o’clock in the afternoon, but the room is filled with the aromas of freshly brewed coffee. You try to block out the noise of your colleagues slurping brown liquid from spoons dipped over and over again into nondescript white mugs as you struggle to distinguish the variety of flavors and acids in your own cups. You’re nervous, you’re over-caffeinated, and you feel your palate giving out on you. “It’s like swimming in a sea of lemon juice—with your mouth open!—which makes it very different to distinguish various acids from each other,” said Kim Westerman, Q grader and founder of Hedonic Terroir-Driven Coffee. She’s talking about the acid test portion of the Q (quality) grader exam, just one of 22 different tests in an exam designed to assess coffee experts’ palates, skills, and knowledge. During the courses that precede the exam, students learn “how to evaluate coffees objectively while utilizing standardized [and] globally…

How to Make French Press Coffee, According to Baristas

The way you make your coffee is a highly personal choice. Some people swear by their Chemex pour-overs, while others rarely stray from their at-home espresso machines. Many favor a classic drip, and when the weather gets hot, you can’t go wrong with a batch of cold brew. One of the most beloved of these methods is, of course, the French press. The first iterations of the French press—sans seal—were invented in 1852, but a version similar to the one we use today was patented in the United States in 1929 by Attilio Calimani and Giulio Moneta. In the near-century since, it’s become one of the most consistent and reliable methods for brewing coffee at home. Read More >> …

Korea’s Convenience Store Coffee Pouches Are My Favorite Way to Caffeinate

I first spotted a coffee pouch on my friend’s Instagram story when he was visiting Korea. I didn’t think much of it at first, but a few weeks later when I was visiting Korea with my parents, they resurfaced the video for me. “Oh we must go try that coffee pouch that Dan tried!” exclaimed my dad. And so we did, on our first jet lagged convenience store run. Replicating my friend’s video exactly, I first located the correct counter height freezer (not the one with the ice creams), slid open the glass door, and extracted a plastic cup full of ice. From the shelf above, I chose a blue and brown “Cantata” pouch with a photo of iced coffee on the front that dripped with condensation. After paying, I popped open the ice cup, peeled open the coffee pouch, and poured the liquid in, which filled up right to the edge of the cup like…

How 2023’s Starbucks Rewards Update Will Impact Your Free Cup of Coffee

Since its start in 2008, Starbucks Rewards has earned somewhat of a cult following. Today’s perks, however, look very different from those available when the rewards first launched over a decade ago—and soon, we’ll be seeing even more changes to the program. According to a Terms of Use update from the company, most rewards items will soon require more stars (their version of points) to redeem. Effectively, that means it will be harder for customers to earn perks like free drinks and bakery items. These changes to the rewards redemption system will go into effect February 13, 2023. The Best Cold Brew Makers, According to Experts

I used to think that my usual black drip coffee with a squeeze of honey was a super-easy drink that I could make with my eyes closed. But after speaking with five coffee experts including enthusiasts, baristas, and brand founders, I’m convinced that cold brew is the quickest, easiest way to get that jolt of caffeine. I know many people like to head out to their favorite coffee shop and pick up their usual order, but for me, my first cup of the day always has to be at home simply for the fact that I want my caffeine and I want it fast. While my black drip coffee doesn’t take long to make in the morning, cold brew is made overnight, so there’s nothing to do when you’re bleary-eyed and tired. Instead, coarse grounds are steeped in cold water for at least eight hours and the result is a smooth concentrate that you can jazz…

The Extremely ’90s History of the Flavored Latte

If, like me, you occasionally revisit Nora Ephron’s 1998 rom-com classic You’ve Got Mail, you may recall one iconic scene at a Starbucks in New York City’s West Village. Bookstore owner Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan), in a masterfully layered pinafore and turtleneck, smiles as she awaits her soon-to-be ‘90s-viral order of a tall, skim, caramel macchiato. She’s recalling an email from Joe Fox, her AOL crush and unwitting rival played by Tom Hanks. “The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee,” Fox’s voiceover proclaims. “…So people who don’t know what the hell they’re doing or who on earth they are, can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall! Decaf! Cappuccino!” Read More >> …

What Does a World-Famous Bartender Drink First Thing in the Morning?

First Things First is a series chronicling the morning beverage routines of some of our favorite people. What can you learn about a person from their coffee mug collection? If that someone is Aaron Polsky, the Los Angeles–based founder of ready-to-drink cocktail company LiveWire Drinks, you’d rightfully surmise that he’s a loving cat dad with an affinity for rock and roll, Larry David’s bristly sense of humor, and old-school Nintendo games. But then, as you make your way toward the back of the shelf, you may wonder about an outlier cup adorned with ballet slippers and more text than a Dr. Bronner’s soap bottle. Don’t worry, there’s a story behind that one, too. Read More >> …

How Climate Change Is Hurting This New Mexican Coffee

In the sunny state of New Mexico, a handful of adventurous coffee roasters add piñons, small pine nuts that grow in the Southwest U.S., to give their coffee a local flavor, balancing coffee beans’ bitterness with piñons’ rich and buttery notes. Indigenous communities in the Southwest discovered and ate piñon nuts from the Pinus edulis tree many years before Europeans arrived, as evidenced by cracked nutshells found at archaeological sites. Like other pine nuts (you may know the European variety from classic basil pesto), piñons are protein-rich and a good source of essential vitamins and minerals, plus they have a sweet, buttery taste. Native American tribes ground the nuts with a stone, sometimes turning them to a nutritious mush. Today, piñon nuts might be used in many other ways in cooking, such as sprinkled over salads, used to make desserts, or simply eaten as snacks. But now, climate change threatens to make this already scarce crop…
