13 Leftover Turkey Recipes That Don’t Start With ‘Thanksgiving’ or End With ‘Sandwich’

Whether you stuff rolls with slices of turkey and ham, or spoonfuls of green bean casserole and creamy mashed potatoes—the Thanksgiving leftover sandwich is as classic as the bird itself. But even tried-and-true favorites can get a bit stale; there’re only so many sandwiches you can stomach. Instead, transform your turkey into a comforting pho or pot pie. Swirl spoonfuls into cake batter for moist, rich slices. Purée roasted roots into soups and whisk gravy or stocks into vinaigrettes. Even leftover pumpkin can make smooth and silky spreads. Thanksgiving Cocktails, Ranked

This list favors warmth. It favors the spiced and the mulled—crowd pleasers that prompt the question: “Do we need more star anise?” It favors the cocktails we exclusively sip on the fourth weekend of November. It favors bourbon, tequila, and everything that can occasionally taste like the inside of a bonfire. On this list, convenience isn’t required, only spice drawer exploration. This is about drinks that taste like how gourds look. This is about leaning in, committing to the bit, and embracing Thanksgiving, The Brand. In the spirit of giving, this list will start with our champion and then work down to our fifth favorite. To be clear, any cocktail on this list is worth the requisite time, effort, and ice. In the top tier of Thanksgiving cocktails, there are no skips. As for how we ranked these, you needn’t know more than that we developed a Highly Complex criteria based on personal consumption, visual appeal,…

6 Tiny Tips to Make Thanksgiving Cooking Easier

Cooking (and hosting) Thanksgiving dinner can make you feel like you need six arms and maybe also six ovens. Since you probably don’t have the ability to make either of those things appear out of thin air, we’ve put together this short-and-sweet guide with tips and tricks for planning your Thanksgiving dinner this holiday season. 1. Choose recipes that bake at the same (or similar) temperature A lot of sweets bake at a lower temperature, around 350 degrees Fahrenheit, so try to pick recipes that accommodate a higher temp, like this Apple Pecan Pie from Erin Jeanne McDowell that bakes at 450 degrees. (Hot tip: most of Erin’s recipes bake at a higher-than-average temperature, so her catalog is a great resource.) If your vegetables or turkey need to roast at 475 degrees, it’s not that much work to bump up the temperature, versus the 125-degree jump another recipe might require. Read More >> …

The Make-Ahead Thanksgiving Stuffing You Can Cook Right Now

With November almost here (but how?), I imagine many soon-to-be Thanksgiving hosts across the country are digging out their recipe files, drafting their menus, making monstrous grocery lists, and crafting their game-day plans. One of the most pressing questions is “what can I make ahead for Thanksgiving?” Sure, you can shop for non-perishable pantry goods like dried or fresh herbs, chicken broth, cornmeal, nuts, dry baking goods, and more. But what can you actually cook anything in advance of Turkey Day? What about make-ahead stuffing? If any of these hosts are like me, many of the same questions are arising: To brine the turkey or not? (Former Test Kitchen Director Josh Cohen did a compare-and-contrast experiment to answer this for himself.) How to cook it this year? (Food52 Senior Food Stylist Anna Billingskog breaks down her favorite methods—and her favorite gravy recipes.) Read More >> …

31 Best Thanksgiving Cocktail Recipes to Toast the Roast

When you’re planning your Thanksgiving menu, you’re sure to get the basics—the turkey, of course. Something like mashed potatoes, a couple of green vegetables, sweet potatoes, perhaps with marshmallows or a brown sugar crumble, a crisp salad, and at least a few types of pie. You’ll probably also give some thought to drinks, both alcoholic and not. A couple varieties of whites and red come to mind. But what about cocktails? Whether you want to make one big-batch punch or sangria that everyone can enjoy, or are ready to unleash your inner mixologist and offer a few signature cocktails for the feast, these Thanksgiving cocktail recipes are the menu upgrade you’ve been waiting for. 13 Gifts Any Thanksgiving Host Will Love

We all know it’s common courtesy to not show up to any dinner, holiday, or party empty-handed. Whether it’s flowers, a dessert, or a bottle of wine, whoever’s playing host that evening will usually appreciate the small gift saying thank you. When it comes to holidays, the host gift can get a little tricky, given the scale of the event. Even if you’re just going to a mellow Friendsgiving, you might walk in and find eight bouquets of fresh flowers scattered across the kitchen counter or dining table with only four vases in sight. If you’re heading to a friend or family member’s house for Thanksgiving this year but are unsure what to give them, we can help. We’ve rounded up 13 small gifts anyone running this year’s turkey-day dinner will appreciate. Read More >> …

How to Host Your First-Ever Friendsgiving

Thanksgiving is great, but I’d argue that Friendsgiving is really where it’s at. Thanksgiving celebrations can sometimes feel stuffy and beholden to old traditions, whereas Friendsgiving is, at its core, just an excuse to host an epic, themed dinner party with your friends. Holly Sheppard, owner and chef of Fig and Pig Catering, is sort of an expert at Friendsgiving, hosting one every year for a group of 10 to 15 people. Here are some of her best tips for pulling off the occasion (along with some tidbits of my own Friendsgiving wisdom). Read More >> …

5 Thanksgiving Turkey Recipes That Are Food Stylist-Approved

It’s well known within food publishing that Thanksgiving photo shoots and recipe testing starts early (and we mean early), and happen numerous times before the actual holiday even rolls around. This has made our Test Kitchen team experts in the field of all things Thanksgiving—particularly our Senior Food Stylist Anna Billingskog. She estimates that she’s cooked some form of a Thanksgiving dinner upwards of a dozen times in her five-plus years as a food stylist for Food52. One year alone, she cooked eight different turkeys. Eight. Turkeys. Needless to say, Anna is what we would call a turkey master. So, of course, I chatted with her to get the scoop on the best and brightest of our Thanksgiving birds on Food52. Without further ado, we present a gaggle of Anna-approved turkey recipes perfect for every host and cook. Read More >> …
