Worry is one of the world’s biggest killers—of success, that is.
Worry is a way of processing real or imagined events in our lives in a negative fashion. When we worry we have a general uncertainty and low expectation that our circumstances will turn out positively.
Here are three ways that worry can ultimately be hazardous to your success:
1. It Takes Your Focus Off Your Goals
Plain and simple, worry causes us to misplace our attention. It frazzles our focus and causes us to lose our momentum and direction toward the one thing that matters most to our success— our goals.
Worry has a way of completely occupying our minds in a way that ultimately distracts us from attaining them. It causes us to be overcome with analyzing all of the scenarios in our mind of how things might turn out wrong and how to prevent it or plan for dealing with it when “it” happens.
The key to achieving your goals is the consistent persistence of focus. Worry any bit at all and you risk short-circuiting that attention and endangering the completion of your goals.
“It makes no sense to worry about things you have no control over because there’s nothing you can do about them, and why worry about things you do control? The activity of worrying keeps you immobilized.”
–Wayne Dyer
2. Worry Is A Negative Attraction
What we focus on expands. This is often true in that we tend to consciously grow things that are important to us. It can also be true that we sometimes simply “attract” more of what we are preoccupied with.
All of us have seen the incredibly optimistic and confident achiever. They are just so happy all the time. Have you ever noticed how these people draw other happy people? As the saying goes, “Birds of a feather flock together.”
But I also know a few people that are “Negative Nancies.” Their worry about every little thing has a way of attracting more negativity into their lives. It’s as if that energy they emit is a beacon that draws the worst situations. What you believe will happen often does happen and, especially with negativity, in greater portion than you anticipated.
If we’re not careful with our worry, it can drive away the positive people we need in our lives to help us succeed as well as draw to us the people and situations that set us back on our journey to success.
“If you live day by day and do the best you can, then you’ll have a great future. If you worry about the future, and you don’t live the best day, you’re not going to have a future.”
–Jason David Frank
3. It Makes You Less Receptive
By receptive I mean that way that God impresses our minds with His own thoughts and our ability to perceive them.
Famed spiritual teachers like Deepak Chopra talk about our minds being receivers to the intentions of the universe. The bible also tells us God speaks to us through various impressions.
Even early 20th-century success researcher, Napoleon Hill, who interviewed dozens of the most successful people at the time referred to our minds as receivers.
But when our minds are filled with worry, it’s like our “receivers” are full of static. All that white noise occupies our attention and filters out the signal. It’s a spiritual block.
The inspiration and intuition that God nudges us with are extremely powerful tools for success. When our receptors (aka minds) are distracted with worry we miss those important nudgings. To do so hampers our success.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
–Philippians 4:6-7
